A storm cell was building fast over Telluride when I spotted this view of the San Juan Mountains. Fresh June snow still traced the gullies and bowls, bright against the dark evergreens. I pulled off the road, set the tripod on the shoulder, and framed a long panorama so the layered ridges and the heavy sky could share the stage.

Thunder rolled somewhere up canyon and the air smelled like wet pine and dust. Wind kept nudging the camera, so I weighted the tripod and waited for a lull. Patches of sunlight slid across the slopes, lighting one ridge while another went deep green. I watched for that moment when the foreground hills, the snowcapped peaks, and the stacked clouds all balanced. A quick check on the histogram kept the bright snow from blowing out while holding detail in the shadows. When the light hit the main peak and the clouds billowed with texture, I took the shot.
