Setting my tripod low among cracked mud knobs, I waited for clouds to part just enough to spotlight the tallest butte. Thunder rumbled far to the west and a cool downdraft brushed my face, lifting dust in tiny spirals. When sunlight glowed across the banded hills and the road curved like a guide toward their ancient walls, I pressed the shutter, hoping to bottle the raw quiet of Badlands National Park before the storm reached the plateau.
