A cactus wren landed on this ribbed saguaro and started calling, beak wide, tail flicking. I was in the Sonoran Desert near Tucson, camera up, waiting for the light to hit the spines just right. The sun slipped through a break in the clouds and every needle lit up like a halo around the bird. I moved a step to keep the sky clean behind it, focused on the eye, and watched for that open-beak moment.

The air was dry and cool, with that faint creosote scent left from a recent sprinkle. Gambel’s quail chattered somewhere below me, and a Gila woodpecker rattled a different saguaro, but the wren owned this perch. I kept the composition simple: green column, blue sky, one loud desert singer.
