The Edmund Pettus Bridge spans the Alabama River in Selma, Alabama, and is one of the most recognized civil rights landmarks in the United States. The steel arch structure carries U.S. Route 80 and is closely tied to the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches, including the events of Bloody Sunday.

I photographed this scene from the roadway approach to emphasize the bridge’s bold geometry and the sense of forward motion it creates. With the sky wide open and the lines pulling your eye toward the arch, I wanted the image to feel clear, grounded, and respectful, like a quiet moment that still carries weight.
