I climbed down to the river access inside Black Canyon of the Gunnison and found a pocket of calm water tucked between steep walls. The Gunnison moved slow here, dark on the near side and glassy enough in the middle to hold a soft reflection of the cliffs. I set the tripod near the shoreline rocks, framed the curve of the river so it leads your eye toward the V of distant canyon walls, and let the bright greens on the right balance the rusted stone on the left.

It was quiet except for a few insects skating across the surface and the low rush of current farther downstream.

Cottonwood leaves clicked together above me. The air smelled like wet rock and spring growth. I waited for the ripples to fade after a fish rose, then focused midway into the scene to keep both the foreground shrubs and the far slopes sharp. A thin cloud softened the sun just long enough to even out the contrast, and I took the shot.
