I stepped to the edge of the North Rim overlook and looked straight down into the cut the Gunnison River has carved. Far below, the water flashed cold blue-green as it twisted between near-vertical walls. I set my tripod close to the rim, double-checked the level, and composed so the bright river runs out of the foreground and disappears toward the distant notch, hemmed in by sheer stone on both sides.

Wind pushed the smell of sage and juniper across the rocks. A raven cruised along the cliff face, its call bouncing once and fading. Clouds were building to the west, but over the canyon the light stayed open long enough to pull texture from every crack and ledge. I waited for a thin patch of sun to lift the color on the river without bleaching the sky, focused midway down the wall for depth, and pressed the shutter when everything lined up.
