Surf rolled in against the rocks and this iguana climbed to the sunniest spot it could find. I photographed it on the shoreline in Key West, the Atlantic behind it shifting from turquoise to pale gray as waves foamed and fell back. I slid in low and to the side so the lizard’s profile, crest, and claws all lined up, and so the diagonal of the rock could carry your eye across the frame. Midday light was harsh, so I waited for a passing cloud to soften the scene just enough to hold detail in the scales.

He held still, throat pouch tucked, eyes watching the water more than me. Salt spray popped in the air, the rocks were slick in places, and gulls argued somewhere out of frame. When the light evened out and the tail lifted clear of the shadow, I took the shot.
