A flash of orange moved up a sea grape tree and stopped me in my tracks. This bright male iguana was climbing the trunk in Key West, claws hooked into the bark, spines lit from behind. I eased in close enough to fill the frame without spooking him, letting the curve of the trunk run diagonally while the leaves framed his body in greens and reds. Midday sun filtered through the canopy, so I waited for a patch of shade to soften the hot spots and hold detail in the scales.

He froze for a moment, eye turned toward me, dewlap tucked tight. A breeze rattled the leaves and the light shifted just enough to give that warm glow along his back. That was my shot.
