But this time, she wasn’t just there to admire it—she was there to capture something specific. Something fleeting.

The trail down to the lake was jagged and damp from the night’s rain. She paused on the rocks, where twisted trees leaned toward the water like they, too, were drawn in by the scene. From this angle, the lake’s mirrored surface reflected Hallett Peak so perfectly it felt like a portal to another world.

The moment didn’t last long.

The light began to shift—just enough. Clouds passed. The breeze teased the surface. But in the span of only a few breaths, everything aligned. Cheri framed the shot, the camera balanced carefully between gnarled roots and granite, and pressed the shutter just as the light broke across the top of the mountain. The colors deepened.
