A golden sunset washes across the façade of Little Rock Central High School, one of America’s most iconic landmarks of education and civil rights history. Opened in 1927 and recognized for its grand Art Deco architecture, this building became the epicenter of the 1957 desegregation crisis when nine courageous Black students, known as the Little Rock Nine, integrated the school under federal protection. I photographed this image on a calm evening when the fading sunlight mirrored the bronze tones of the brick façade. I aligned the shot straight down the central walkway to emphasize the school’s monumental symmetry and waited for the clouds to ignite with soft reds and golds. Standing there, I felt the weight of its past, a place of learning, conflict, and progress, and wanted the light to reflect both reverence and hope.
