Mackinac Lighthouse: Round Island Light, Michigan Nautical Seascape Wall Art

I had this feeling when I photographed Mackinac's guardian, the old Round Island Light, standing strong against stormy skies. Perhaps this lighthouse, on its tiny, lone piece of land, was defying the storm. It protects something far bigger than the waters of the Straits of Mackinac.

The weather wasn’t good that day, the sky was turning gray, full of ominous clouds. Yet there it was, the Round Island Light, across the water. Red, bold, and unshaken by the storm that was gathering behind it. As my heart was racing with excitement, I grabbed my camera, knowing I’ll capture something special. With each click of the shutter the lighthouse became not just a structure, but a symbol of endurance. The winds howled and the water around the island rippled in anticipation of the coming storm, but the lighthouse stood strong. For over a century, it was a sentinel, watching over the entrance to Lake Michigan and Mackinac Island.

The clouds above swirled like a stormy ballet, their deep grays contrasting with the bright red of the lighthouse. Even in the chaos, there was peace—a certain calmness in the way the old Round Island lighthouse claimed its space in the Straits of Mackinac, refusing to blend in with the storm. It was like it had seen it all before and would see it all again.

As a photographer, you chase these moments. You hope for that fleeting chance when nature and history collide in front of your lens. That’s what happened here. I felt lucky, as if the lighthouse had posed for me, showcasing its role as the steadfast guardian of Mackinac. It felt like more than taking a picture; it was capturing a piece of its legacy, standing firm against nature.

At that moment, I realized the image's power wasn’t just in the stormy backdrop or the lighthouse's sharp lines. It was in what this place represents. Resilience. Strength. A calm in the storm.
