Bear Lake Sunrise Print: Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado Landscape

I reached Bear Lake before the first color showed and picked my way over slick rocks to the shoreline. The wind dropped just as the sky warmed, so the water turned to glass and held a perfect reflection of the ridge and the soft yellow glow behind it. I set the tripod low between two boulders, framed the scene so foreground rocks anchored the corners, and let the eye travel across the lake to that notch of light around Hallett Peak.

Breath fogged a little in the cool air. Pine needles smelled sharp and wet. Now and then a trout rose and broke the mirror, then the ripples faded and the surface settled again. I shifted a step to keep a branch out of the frame, checked focus on the distant treeline, and waited for the moment when the clouds caught the sun from below. When the color peaked and the reflection sharpened, I pressed the shutter.
