Thor’s Hammer rises above the landscape like a solitary guardian, its unusual shape immediately commanding attention among the countless hoodoos of Bryce Canyon National Park. As the evening light moved across the canyon, the rock formations took on rich shades of orange, rust, and red. Soft clouds overhead caught the remaining warmth of the sunset, adding another layer of color to a landscape already filled with remarkable shapes and textures.

I framed Thor’s Hammer prominently along the left side so its distinctive silhouette could stand apart while still revealing the immense landscape surrounding it. Beyond the formation, rows of hoodoos stretch across the canyon, interrupted by pockets of dark green evergreens and pale cliffs in the distance. The contrast between the towering foreground formation and the intricate maze beyond it gives the photograph a wonderful sense of depth and scale.

What makes Bryce Canyon so fascinating to photograph is how dramatically the landscape changes with the light. Near sunset, every ridge, hoodoo, and narrow opening begins to reveal different colors and shadows. In this moment, Thor’s Hammer became the anchor for an expansive view filled with glowing stone and a warm evening sky. I wanted the photograph to capture both the iconic character of this formation and the extraordinary scale of the landscape around it, preserving that brief moment when the canyon seemed to glow from within.
