Black Canyon Sunset Print: Twisted Juniper Tree, Colorado Landscape

Late light skimmed across the rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison and caught this bleached juniper just as I rounded the bend. Its limbs curled toward the sky like sculpture, pointing across the gap to sunlit cliffs on the far side. I dropped my pack, set the tripod low in the scrub, and lined up the trunk so it arcs into the frame and leads your eye to the canyon beyond.

Wind carried the dry smell of sage and dust. Small insects buzzed in the warm air. Shadows from passing clouds moved across the ground in slow bands, so I waited for a clear patch of sun to warm the wood without blowing out the highlights in the rock face. I focused on the bark where the main limb splits, checked depth to keep the distant wall reasonably sharp, and pressed the shutter when the color turned that brief honey tone you only get before sunset
