I walked the shaded path at Jungle Gardens on Avery Island and stopped when the red bridge lined up with the Buddha shrine. Bamboo arched in from the right, Spanish moss hung from the oaks on the left, and the statue sat centered above a mound of stone. I set the tripod on the bridge planks so the rails could curve into the frame and lead your eye straight up the steps.

Humidity wrapped the whole scene. Light filtered through leaves in thin rays and bounced off the yellow interior walls behind the statue. I waited for a small break in the clouds so the highlights would stay soft and the shadows wouldn’t swallow the details in the rocks. A dragonfly hovered over the water, cicadas buzzed, and everything else felt still.
