Two young burrowing owls stare from the lip of a sandy burrow in the Badlands, one crouched low and the other standing tall. I settled into a ground-level position at a respectful distance so the owlets could relax. After a few quiet minutes, the bolder sibling climbed the mound while the other peeked from the tunnel, giving me that side-by-side moment of curiosity and calm. I framed them with a shallow depth of field to hold focus on the faces and leave the Badlands grasses softly blurred, then waited for the catchlight to land in both eyes before clicking the shutter.
