A collared peccary, commonly known as a javelina, moves through a patch of light in this detailed animal portrait. Its coarse coat is filled with shades of brown, gray, black, and gold, with individual bristles catching the sunlight against the much darker surroundings. When I photographed this javelina, the contrast between the light and shadow immediately caught my attention. As it moved across the ground, sunlight reached its back and sides, bringing out individual strands and subtle variations in the coarse fur that might otherwise have disappeared into the darker setting. I kept the composition focused closely on the animal, allowing its profile, movement, and texture to become the strongest elements of the photograph. Even the lifted front foot adds a small sense of motion to an otherwise quiet moment.

What I enjoy about this image is the opportunity to look closely at an animal strongly associated with the desert Southwest. Javelinas can appear dark and almost uniform from a distance, but the light in this photograph reveals how much color and texture are actually present in their coats.
