When you stand before a statue, what do you feel? Is it awe, curiosity, or something else? When I saw Lady Liberty on the Island of Mackinac, I had hope. This replica stands tall in the heart of Michigan and symbolizes freedom. She is a powerful symbol of hope to all that walk by, surrounded by the natural beauty of Mackinac Island.

I was drawn to her instantly. Lady Liberty is captivating, no matter if she’s big or small. Since 1950, this statue, given by the Boy Scouts of America, has watched over the island. Her message is timeless, and her courage and determination that built our nation is what she represents.

A photographer, I am looking for these moments. Standing beneath her, I knew the shot had to communicate her strength. I bent low so she had even more of a towering presence. The sky behind her spread out in all directions, making for the perfect backdrop. The blue sky and green trees were framing her into a masterpiece to be taken.

I clicked the shutter, capturing that moment. She seemed to grow even taller. While this is a smaller Lady Liberty than her New York counterpart, her message is still just as big. The story of everlasting fidelity and loyalty is told by her plaque below.
