I was in an Oregon woodland, drawn to this pale, V-shaped trunk standing out against the darker tangle behind it. The bark carried streaks of lichen and old scars, almost white in places, so I set up low and centered to let that texture lead the frame while the surrounding trees arched in like a natural cathedral.

I waited for the sun to slide into a gap, just enough to star through the leaves without washing the scene. The air was damp and cool, smelling of soil and moss. A jay called once, then the grove went quiet except for a slight rustle high overhead. When the light hit the trunk and the background fell a step darker, I clicked the shutter.
