What is it about towering formations like this that seem to call us from miles away? Standing before Shiprock in New Mexico, I saw how this towering monadnock embodies the union of sky and stone. Shiprock’s monumental presence wasn’t just something to see—it was something to feel.

Getting here wasn’t simple. The road stretched endlessly through barren desert, and for a while, I wondered if I’d missed a turn. Then, out of nowhere, it appeared—a jagged silhouette slicing into the vast expanse of desert sky. It stopped me in my tracks, a quiet giant rising with unmistakable authority.

I wanted to capture Shiprock in a way that reflected its spirit, so I scouted for the perfect vantage point. I chose a spot where the jagged ridge led toward the peak, like a path into the past. The wind stirred dust around me, a reminder of how alive this landscape is, even in its stillness.

Through my lens, I could see more than just rock. This monolith has a pulse, a life shaped by millions of years of wind, fire, and time. To the Navajo, it’s sacred—steeped in legends and a symbol of endurance. I thought about how these stories have traveled across generations, much like the wind swirling at my feet.
