I reached the rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison before first light, bundled against the chill and listening to the quiet click of leaves in the dark. When the horizon finally opened, a thin line of orange spread across the clouds and the Gunnison River far below caught it like a strip of liquid metal. I set my tripod at the edge of the shrubs, framed the canyon so the bright river sat in the center of the V, and used the foreground brush to anchor the bottom of the image.

Cold air smelled like sage and damp rock. A single bird called from somewhere behind me, then went silent. I kept an eye on the histogram as the sky brightened, waiting for that sweet spot when the sun was up but not harsh, when detail still held in the cliffs and the clouds kept their texture. I focused halfway into the scene to keep both the near leaves and distant ridges sharp, steadied my breath, and pressed the shutter as the light flared.
