Black Canyon Sunrise Print: Colorado Landscape Photography

I reached the overlook in the dark and set the tripod before I could see the canyon floor. When the sun finally cleared the horizon it flared just above the rim, sending thin rays across the Painted Wall and lighting the quartz veins like chalk marks on slate. The Gunnison River far below picked up the first light and traced a pale curve through the shadowed gorge. I shifted my footing to keep a foreground ledge in the lower left for scale, then tilted slightly so the sunstar sat just off the edge of the frame.

Cold air smelled like sage and damp rock. A few early insects buzzed near the shrubs. The wind was light, enough to rustle leaves but not shake the camera. I watched the histogram climb as the sun brightened, waited for a cloud to soften the glare, and refocused on the rock face to hold detail in those bright mineral lines. When the rays stretched cleanly across the canyon and the river glowed, I pressed the shutter.
