A green truss suspension bridge stretches over the churning St Louis River, anchored by rugged stone towers that rise from dark basalt ledges. I followed a narrow trail to a riverside outcrop, hoping to line up the bridge cables with the river’s swift current. Setting my tripod low on moss-covered rock, I waited for clouds to brighten so every grain in the stonework and ripple in the water would show. A pair of chickadees flitted overhead, and the steady hum of water muffled distant footfalls on the planks. When light hit the towers just right I pressed the shutter, aiming to capture the balance of human craft and wild river energy that defines Jay Cooke State Park.
