I learned this while writing this story after seeing this remarkable formation of the American White Ibis birds in flight when visiting the Everglades. A group of ibises is called a colony when they are standing, or a wedge when they are flying. Ibises are known to fly in a triangular pattern.

Looking up, I saw them—seven ibises flying in formation like a team on a mission. My heart raced. I scrambled to raise my camera, knowing that timing was everything.

As I clicked the shutter, I thought about how these birds are built to endure. They thrive in environments most creatures avoid—wetlands, marshes, and swamps. Yet here they were, gliding as if they owned the world. Their bright white feathers stood out brilliantly against the blue sky, and their coordination was breathtaking. I couldn’t help but marvel at their instinctive grace. What could be more inspiring than seeing nature’s teamwork in action?
